The Swell Season (Ireland)
So here is another music group that escaped us in 2007. The Swell Season is Glen Hansard (lead singer of the Irish band The Frames) and Czech singer and pianist Marketa Irglova. Let me tell you it is beautiful. Great singer songwriter feel with haunting vocal melodies over sparce yet relevant musical arrangements. In a word, brilliant!
This dynamic duo didn’t escape my sister last year. I was first told about The Swell Season by Leah, who had just seen the movie Once. She literally got in touch with me the next day and told me how much we were missing out by not having seen the movie yet – and that the music was great. So now I’m telling you…go rent the movie Once, watch it’s enigmatic story of experiencing life, writing songs about it, playing them for other people, and eventually recording them. The longer you wait, the more you are missing out. After you see the movie you will listen to and experience the songs over and over like watching the movie. They all tell part of the story.
